Designer Dog Breeds

Designer dog breeds, as they are commonly called, are a cross between two breeds of purebred dogs. As discussed elsewhere on this site, purebred dogs have been bred over generations in order to maintain the same bloodline, the idea being to create puppies which will have very similar and dependable physical appearances and characteristics.

One of the reasons people like purebred dogs is because they will have a pretty good sense of what they’ll be getting beforehand—or at least a more clear sense than picking up a dog at a pet store or the humane society. Designer dog breeds just provide more options along the same lines of reasoning.

Designer dogs still have documented purebred ancestry that can be clearly traced. When you breed two types of purebred dogs together, the idea is to get a combination of the characteristics in both breeds. People choosing designer dogs with this reasoning in mind will want to read about the temperament and characteristics for both breeds before choosing a specific kind of dog. Sometimes designer dogs have genetic problems, but the probability is lower than with purebred dogs because the gene pool is mixed.
